Holding Space: Reflections from the Fairfax Walk for Suicide Prevention

Last weekend, I served as a Care Team Member at the Fairfax Walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Hundreds gathered (families, friends, survivors, advocates) each carrying stories in their hearts.

As a Care Team member, my role was simple yet sacred: to be present. To hold space for those who came to share, remember, or just be among others who understand.

Throughout the day, I listened to parents speak their children’s names aloud. I witnessed tears that came from deep sorrow and grief. I sat beside people, wherever they needed to land, to share their stories and their heartbreak. There was no fixing, no advice. Just shared humanity, love, and loss woven together in conversation and silence.

Each encounter reminded me that healing begins when we are heard. That there is courage in showing up, both for ourselves and for others. And that community, especially one built around something as tender as this loss, can hold more light than darkness.

As I left that day, I felt deeply moved by the strength of those who walked. For every step, every tear, every story spoken aloud, there was connection. And connection is where hope begins to grow again.

May we keep walking, together.

As the founder of Joanna Barrett Therapy & Wellness, where I integrate psychotherapy, yoga, and mindfulness to support emotional well-being and nervous system regulation, I’m honored to also serve with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s National Capital Area Chapter to help create spaces where healing, compassion, and hope can take root.

If you or someone you love has been impacted by suicide, I encourage you to explore the work of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and join a future Out of the Darkness Walk in your community. These walks are powerful reminders that no one walks alone, and that healing, hope, and connection are always possible.
